Happy solstice and summer,

I just returned from Boulder, where I took a 4-handed workshop with Liz Stewart (who I’ve been mentoring with over the past year) and Isaac Osborne. The class was incredible. We focused on how to work with two practitioners on a client at the same time—a modality known as 4-handed work. Alongside that, we also explored movement and breath-work.

I watched the way liz and Isaac worked together with a client through a 3-series.  And of course I was in a group learning how to do 4 handed work myself. It’s exactly what it sounds like, two practitioners work on a client simultaneously. The work is intense and yet integrative for the client. Imagine 2 practitioners working on you at the same time- it’s a lot to receive, but the level of change that happens can be profound.  And because there is so much input, sessions are much shorter then a typical Rolfing session, anywhere from 20-35 minutes hands on. It was eye-opening to feel the transmission of connection between where I was working and where my partner was—it’s changed the way I think about touch.

I will not be incorporating the 4-handed work because frankly there isn’t another practitioner in the area to partner with. And honestly, it’s not quite my jam. That being said my experience was still super valuable. Learning new styles of work can be SO awkward, and yet that awkwardness can be helpful to tap into and grow as a practitioner/person.
